Dreyer har udtalt følgende om filmens titel – i et svarbrev til den franske filmforsker og forfatter Jean Sémolué, 27/10 1961, på hans spørgsmål:”Comment faut-il expliquer l’orthographe de Vampyr (et non Vampire)?”
Dreyers svar: ”VAMPYR instead of VAMPIRE is a mistake by the distributors, since VAMPIRE both in France and in England is the correct word. In German the word is spelled VAMPIR, so I do not understand at all from where the word VAMPYR originates”.
